Stephen Neish has been GBC’s Head of News since 1996. As News Editor, he is in overall charge of the news output on both GBC Television and Radio Gibraltar.

He graduated from Bristol University with a degree in Modern Languages and worked as a freelance reporter for a year before joining the Corporation full time as a broadcast journalist in 1985.

Just over a year later he was sent on his first assignment abroad, to report on a meeting of the Brussels Process in London. The Foreign Secretary at the time, Sir Geoffrey Howe, became the first in a long list of high-profile interviewees down the years for Stephen, ranging from former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher to ex England Football Manager Sir Bobby Robson and legendary actor Sir John Mills.

In 1987 he attended a television production news editor training course in London, and was promoted soon afterwards to Duty Editor. In 1996 he was appointed to the vacant post of News Editor after taking charge of that year’s general election campaign coverage. On that occasion, and at every general election since, he chaired the traditional eve-of-poll Leaders Debate, one of GBC Television’s most keenly watched programmes.

In the 1990s he produced and presented "In Person", a TV series comprising one-to-one interviews with local personalities, and he’s been a regular presenter of, and contributor to, numerous other current affairs programmes including City Talk, Tonight and Viewpoint. He co-produced the groundbreaking "Live From The Rock" discussion series and brought back GBC Television's "Review of the Year" which had not been produced for many years.

He provided daily reports of the inquest into the death of three IRA members shot in Gibraltar in 1988 and covered the final round of constitutional talks in London in 2006 at which Gibraltar’s new Constitution was agreed.

Stephen is married to Jyoti and they have two grown up children. He enjoys current affairs, rock music and sport, especially football.
