A new telecoms company, Shine, has opened to the public. The operator offers prepaid mobile and broadband services, and also has a license to offer fix line and internet, which it may do in the future.
Shine has invested millions of pounds on infrastructure, staff and a local data centre, and says it aims to offer a refreshing alternative to Gibraltar’s telecoms industry.
For a £5 monthly fee customers will be able to call local mobiles and landlines for 5p per minute; local SMS will also cost 5p. Users can also choose to pay a standard rate for calls and SMS services. Shine is also offering mobile number portability.
CEO Peter Zimmer, from partners Deutsche Telekon, says the company is aware of the record of previous telecoms companies setting up on the Rock, but says Shine has some serious backers and is here to stay.
