Illegal immigrant with mental health problems sent to prison ahead of deportation

A Cuban man with mental health problems has been sent to prison after pleading guilty to being an illegal immigrant. The man had swum from La Linea to the Rock last November in the hope of getting treatment for his mental health problems.

He was sent to Ocean Views where he received care. Upon release he was arrested and charged for having no documentation that would allow him to reside on the Rock. At the Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, the man pleaded guilty and was given a month-long conditional discharge.

The Royal Gibraltar Police says it is working to get the correct documentation together in order for him to be deported back to Cuba. Stipendiary Magistrate Charles Pitto said he had to send the man to prison as “it’s the only place we have”.

The Cuban is set to re-appear in court in a month’s time unless he has been repatriated before then.
