Migrant arrivals in Spain have tripled compared to this time last year, according to the International Organisation for Migration.
Nearly 12 thousand have arrived in Spain so far this year, with over eight thousand arriving by sea: most via the Strait of Gibraltar. Italy is still the country that has received the greatest number, at over 90 thousand. However, the overall rate of migration to Europe has fallen by nearly 60 percent compared to the same period last year.
This week saw dramatic footage as a boat full of migrants pulled up on a busy beach in Zahara de los Atunes, Cadiz province. Over 20 people fled from the boat; some have since been found, according to the news agency AFP, which adds that they will be taken to migrant reception centres where they can then apply for asylum.
