Parliament has passed the Broadcasting Act 2012, that replaces the GBC Act. It was passed by Government majority, with the Opposition voting against, as it felt there were a number of technical objections which meant they could not support it.
The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, said the new Act ends GBC’s monopoly on broadcasting and introduces a regulatory structure for all broadcasting in Gibraltar.
Two other bills were also passed, one of which harmonises the position on Still Births. Whereas before there were conflicting periods in different laws, this has now been established at 24 weeks.
Before Parliament adjourned sine die both the Chief Minister and the Deputy Leader of the GSD, Daniel Feetham paid tribute to the Speaker, Haresh Budhrani QC, who has now retired after eight years in office. Mr. Picardo concluded with the remark that Mr Budhrani’s service to Gibraltar had not ended today.
