Gibraltar Fair to run from 31st August

Arrangements are underway for the Gibraltar Fair, which will take to the Commonwealth Parade between Friday 31st August and Friday 7th September. Organisers are promising a range of attractions for different age groups. Eating and drinking outlets will also be provided, including the popular churros stall.

GFA 3:1 Notts County

The Gibraltar Football Association has beaten Notts County FC 3-1. The 1,100 fans who watched on at the Victoria Stadium were treated to goals by Joseph Chipolina, Lee Casciaro and Roy Chipolina. GFA Manager Allen Bula confirmed it would be the last time the GFA played at the Victoria Stadium this summer; the team will rest and the pitch is likely to be relaid in the next few months.

44 bath-to-shower conversions in seven months

The Government has carried out 44 bath-to-shower conversions for senior citizens in the past 7 months. The Occupational Therapy Department has provided advice and, where necessary, access has been improved by removing stairs and adding handrails. The total cost of the works is about three hundred thousand pounds.

Summer scheme takes in 319 students

What the smell was that?

Residents of the Westside area were somewhat baffled by a rather unpleasant smell on Saturday. A livestock carrier had motored into local waters unannounced. Carrying thousands of cattle, its horrible stench left Gibraltar’s streets smelling like a zoo. Assisted by Westerly winds, the pungent odour of cow manure even extended into town.

Picardo says contractor at fault for blackout

After a hectic Monday evening spent returning power to Gibraltar households and businesses, GibElec has concentrated its efforts on investigating the cause of the four-hour blackout. The Chief Minister has told GBC the fault appears to have come about as a result of excavations carried out by a contractor. Fabian Picardo has criticised the GSD administration for a lack of investment in Gibraltar’s power infrastructure.

New Port Sergeant

Port Sergeant Chris Canepa officially has handed over the Keys to the City of Gibraltar to his successor, Steven Wood. The Port Sergeant is the ceremonial custodian of the Keys, and carries out a number of public symbolic functions, such as the Ceremony of the Keys. Colour Sergeant Wood says he’s looking forward to the role.

Former Police Commissioner Joe Canepa passes away

Joe Canepa, former Commissioner of Police, died on Sunday aged 79. Mr Canepa was Commissioner when three IRA suspects were shot dead in 1988 and during the smuggling riots in 1995. More recently, he worked towards promoting and safeguarding the interests of pensioners on the Rock as Chairman of the Pensioners Association. Our condolences to his family.

Serious accident: cyclist collides with motorcyclist

A local man is intensive care after a serious traffic accident on Europa Road yesterday. GBC understands the cyclist was exiting Sunset Close, and turned left towards Europa Point. The motorcyclist was heading North on Europa Road when they collided. The motorcyclist continues in intensive care, having suffered serious injuries.

One in four Spaniards unemployed

Spanish fishermen agree to extend 'deadline'

Spanish fishermen have agreed to extend their deadline for a solution to the fishing conflict by a few days, in order to accommodate a meeting with the Government on the 3rd of August. The Government has issued a statement saying it’s convened a meeting with La Linea and Algeciras fishermen representatives for that date to assess the progress made by the Environmental Working Group, which it has established.

The Euro to continue weakening

The Euro is expected to weaken by a further 5% over the next 12 months. Speaking to GBC, the Director of Global Research and Investments at Barclays Wealth, Henk Potts, said one of the big unknowns was the ability of European Officials to make progress in solving the sovereign debt crisis. The current crisis, he added, could take a decade to clear.

First step to smoking ban

Ombudsman distributes copies of their Annual Report

The office of the Ombudsman took to Main Street on Thursday to distribute copies of their Annual Report. Michaela McAleer, of the Office of the Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, was present. Lauren Montero to dance at Olympics event

VOGG writes to Governor about incursions

The Voice of Gibraltar Group has handed a letter to the Governor aiming to convey the strength of feeling that exists amongst the public in relation to the Guardia Civil incursions. Plan to remove jellyfish in the Bay

A plan for removing jellyfish from the Bay of Gibraltar has been set in motion by the Council in Algeciras. The Algeciras Port Authority will provide two boats to clear up the waters surrounding the beaches, and prevent the jellyfish from reaching the shore. Jellyfish have also proved problematic in Gibraltar with lifeguards having to raise the red flag, warning bathers to keep away from the water.

Jonathan Linares becomes first Gibraltarian to swim English Channel

Jonathan Linares has become the first Gibraltarian to swim the English Channel. The 27-year-old successfully completed the very tough 34-kilometre challenge from Dover to Cap Gris Nez in France yesterday. It took him 13hrs 35min. Two local men in court for possession of a knife

Two men have appeared in court, in separate cases, on charges of possession of an offensive weapon. Adrian Parody of 2 Belgravia Court pleaded guilty to possession of a prohibited import, namely a butterfly knife. Brendan Barnes, of 5 Canton House, Varyl Begg Estate, was found in possession of a knife by RGP officers in August last year. He has pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon.

British Embassy in Madrid files complaint

The British Embassy in Madrid has complained to representatives of the Spanish Foreign Ministry, describing last Friday’s Guardia Civil incident as ‘unlawful’. Daniel Pruce, a senior diplomat at the Embassy, said the actions had no basis in international law, and such behaviour from the law enforcement agencies of a close and valued partner was ‘intolerable’.

GHA's educational standards recognised

The Health Professions Council (HPC) has, for the first time, approved placements for a paramedic degree outside the UK, following a validation visit to Gibraltar. The HPC validated the educational standards in the Health Authority, allowing students to gain the 'skills passport', required for a degree in Paramedic Science, in Gibraltar.

The Gibraltar Federation of Sea Anglers says local fishermen no longer feel safe in Gibraltar waters. Following last week’s incident, which saw a Guardia Civil launch arrested a local vessel in Gibraltar Waters, the Federation has called for an explanation from the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Gibraltar Police as to why the local vessel wasn’t protected.

Woman hospitalised after motorcycle accident

A traffic accident on Saturday night has resulted in a woman being hospitalised with a fractured leg and hip. The accident happened at around 11 at night, when a young man on a motorcycle collided with a man and woman crossing Rosia Road. The woman injured in the accident is still in hospital, as is the motorcyclist. The RGP says a traffic accident investigation is underway.

Two locals arrested by Guardia Civil in Gib waters

Two local men were arrested on Friday night by the Guardia Civil approximately 200m off Europa Point, in British Gibraltar territorial waters. The Spanish paramilitary officers boarded the local fishing boat and arrested the two Gibraltarian men, taking them and their fishing vessel to Algeciras. The two men have told GBC how they were reported for fishing tuna in Spanish waters, despite being in the high seas when landing their catch.

Over £7million of cannabis seized, 2 men arrested

Two men have been arrested in connection with a vessel carrying approximately 1.5 tonnes of cannabis resin. Late on Friday night, the Gibraltar Defence Police found the white launch abandoned just off the Detached Mole. The Royal Gibraltar Police joined the operation and shortly after two men were arrested on the Mole. GBC understands the men are Spanish nationals. 44 bales of cannabis resin have been seized, with a street value of approximately £7.5 million.

GFA 4-0 Portsmouth FC

The Gibraltar Football Association had too much for Portsmouth FC, running out 4-0 winners at a packed Victoria Stadium. George Cabrera opened the scoring with an unstoppable half-volley before Aaron Payas calmly converted a penalty to make it 2-0 at half time. Lee Casciaro proved a handful in the second half, scoring two goals to cap a memorable night for the GFA.

GDP Officers Prepare for Olympic Duty

Eight Gibraltar Defence Police Officers are being deployed to the UK on Monday for the 2012 Olympics. The team will be based in Weymouth. Al Gore to speak at "Thinking Green" conference

The former Vice-President of the United States and Nobel Peace Laureate, Al Gore, is one of two keynote speakers announced for the Government’s “Thinking Green” conference on the environment, along with advisor to Barack Obama, Juan Verde. The Minister for the Environment, Dr John Cortes, said the “Thinking Green” conference aims to “put Gibraltar firmly on the map from an environmental perspective”. It will take place on the 21st of October, most probably at the Tercentenary Hall, and will also include a Trade Fair for environmentally friendly businesses, as well as a Gala Dinner at St. Michael’s Cave.

Local man begins eight year prison sentence

A man began an eight year sentence for drugs importation on Wednesday after being extradited to Gibraltar from Spain. Dylan Lara was arrested in July 2008 during a Customs raid, but fled Gibraltar. GFA player suspended for six months

The GFA has denied that any of its players spat at the opposition during the match against Jersey. The GFA says it has banned one of its players for six months, for what it describes as ‘unacceptable behaviour’. More power to the RGP

Two new RGP interceptor vessels are now operational following a few weeks of sea trials. The 13-metre long boats are each powered by four powerful outboard engines and are capable of high speeds exceeding 50 knots, even in choppy seas. Algeciras fishermen threaten mass incursion

Frontier queues ease off as La Linea fair opens

Frontier queues returned to normal on Sunday after a couple of very slow days. On Friday afternoon and evening, it took two hours to cross into La Linea. At times on Saturday, vehicles took over an hour to negotiate the busy frontier loops. On Sunday, traffic flowed relatively freely into a La Linea celebrating the start of their fair week. The RGP has increased its presence at the frontier and will allow parking at the frontier loop while the La Linea fair is on provided the queues don’t build up.

Tobacco smuggling in Spain has risen by almost 30 per cent in the past 12 months. According to the New York Times, the sharp increase is linked to the country’s recession. Gibraltar accounts for the second largest portion of contraband, behind Andorra. Forty per cent of smuggled cigarettes in Spain come across the Andorra border into Cataluña.

Picardo's former client Morris found innocent of fraud

Tony Morris, a former client of Fabian Picardo, accused of stealing 52 million pounds from the GP Noble pension fund, has been cleared of all charges following a two month trial. The trial, held at Southwark Crown Court, saw the Chief Minister giving evidence via video link from an office in Hassans. 2-hour frontier queues hit North district

17-year-old dies in motorbike accident

A young man died in a traffic accident on Waterport Road in the early hours of Thursday morning. The Royal Gibraltar Regiment has confirmed the man's identity; 17-year-old Jessie Zammitt was a Private in the RG, who've said they're mourning his passing. Government reveals Age of Consent will remain at 16

Campamento Beach closed due to oil spill

An oil spill in the Bay of Gibraltar resulted in the Campamento Beach having to close to bathers on Sunday. GBC understands the Gibraltar Port Authority is monitoring the situation, but so far no oil from this spill had been spotted in local waters.

2 Navy warships to visit Rock this week

An article in the Spanish national daily ABC rejects the theory that Gibraltar was one of the last refuges of Neanderthal man, claiming Neanderthal remains from the Spanish region of Cantabria are more recent than those found on the Rock. However, the Director of the Gibraltar Museum, Professor Clive Finlayson, says the news is “total sensationalism”.

Guardia Civil incursions

There were several incursions by a large Guardia Civil vessel on Monday morning, initially off the Western end of the runway, and later off Parson’s Lodge towards the South. The 30-metre long Rio Guadiana came in and out of Gibraltar waters, ignoring call from the Royal Navy to leave.
