The number of migrants rescued from the Strait of Gibraltar so far this year is four times what it was during the same period last year. This is according to statistics from the regional Spanish government, reported on in Europa Sur. Over five thousand migrants had been rescued from the Strait of Gibraltar by this week, with at least twelve deaths.
With both the increasing urgency for the Rock and the wider global picture in mind, a local humanitarian activist with experience in the refugee camps of France and Greece has set up a new organisation that aims to help displaced people by collaborating with those that work with them. Dan Teuma hopes to get Gibraltar involved in his new project, Aniko. He spoke to Christina Cortes.
