262 new COVID cases confirmed in Gibraltar this week

262 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Gibraltar in the last week.

There are six cases in hospital: five in the COVID-19 Ward, and one in the Critical Care Unit. There are also 16 cases in Elderly Residential Services.

Meanwhile, COVID cases in the UK have risen by over 30 percent this week - half a million people, according to the Office of National Statistics.

According to reports in the BBC, the surge is due to two new highly-transmissible sub-variants of Omicron.

The director of clinical programmes at the UK Health Security Agency, Dr Mary Ramsay, said vaccination remains the best defence against severe disease and hospitalisation, urging the elderly and the vulnerable in particular to get their boosters if they have not yet done so.
