HM Customs Gibraltar is celebrating its 275th anniversary with officers first levying import duties in 1750.

Collector of Customs, John Payas says it's an important milestone, paying tribute to those who have forged the department into what it is today.

A breakfast for retired officers was followed by a ceremonial guard inspected by the Chief Minister at No 6 Convent Place at midday.

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo described the anniversary as a moment to recognise the essential role Customs plays, not only in collecting duties, but also in law enforcement and combating the illegal drugs trade.
