An event to celebrate Hanukkah saw a minute's silence held over Sunday's antisemitic terrorist attack in Australia.

The Hanukkah lighting, organised by Maccabi Gibraltar, took place at at Boyds, and was attended by Government and Opposition representatives and leaders of other faiths.

The eight-day festival of lights celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and spirituality over materialism.

It’s the first time in over ten years that such an event has been organised, with the last one led by the late Momi Levy.

Ahead of the event, the President of Maccabi Gibraltar, Amit Shay, explained what it would consist of.

RGP ON SECURITY

The Royal Gibraltar Police said it is liaising with local Jewish community representatives "and will be stepping up presence and reassurance patrols in venues and synagogues at this important time".

In response to GBC questions, the RGP says there is no information to directly relate the Sydney attack to Gibraltar. However, it says all officers have been briefed to remain on high alert for any potential threat or risks.

It expresses its condolences to the families and friends affected by the attack.

The RGP advises the public to remain vigilant, and report anything suspicious or out of place.

You can contact the police on 20072500, on the RGP's online reporting portal, or by calling 999 in an emergency.
