Ancient Greek relic identified in Gibraltar: 'gorgoneion' unearthed in Gorham's Cave

Pieces of an Ancient Greek artefact, believed to be between 2,600 and 2,800 years old, have been identified on the rock, and would, long ago, have formed part of what is known as a gorgoneion.

The announcement was made at the Calpe Conference earlier today, where Minister for Heritage, John Cortes observed that archaelogy had, in this unusual case, complemented mythology rather than debunked it.

It was he who unveiled the fragments after the Professor Clive Finlayson made the announcement, before Dr Geraldine Finlayson - another of the team working at Gorham's Cave - supplied some context for the find, and gave an idea of the degree of skill and combined efforts involved in a discovery of this magnitude.
