Barclaycard to close accounts on the Rock

Barclaycards will be a thing of the past for Gibraltar residents, as the bank will stop offering credit cards to customers living outside the UK.

Cards will stop working after the 30th of May, with accounts to be closed a month later. However, GBC understands corporate cards are not affected, only consumer credit cards.

In response to GBC questions, a spokesperson for Barclays said cardholders in Gibraltar need to provide a permanent UK address in order to keep their account open.

Meanwhile, Barclays apologised to customers in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man after they too were told their credit cards would stop working next month if they don't have a mainland address.

Barclays said this was an error, and that there will be no change to services for existing cardholders in the Crown Dependencies.

Responding to the news, Roy Clinton described this as "regrettable" discrimination.
