Volunteers from the British Forces community have taken part in a 'FOD plod', clearing the runway of 25 to 30 kgs of rubbish and debris.
The annual RAF Gibraltar event saw participants collect FOD - which stands for 'fallen object debris' from the airfield surface. The reason being that even the smallest pieces of litter can cause damage to plane engines and impact flight safety.
Most of the debris collected was general waste. A spokesperson told GBC the most commonly found items were cigarette packets and butts - describing their potential damage as 'incredible'.
