Education and Environment Minister John Cortes announced a significant boost to Gibraltar’s education workforce, with 49 new permanent teaching posts set to be created this year, bringing the total complement to a record 521.
The move is expected to support young teachers seeking permanent roles and coincides with a pending agreement with the NASUWT on supply worker policy.
Dr Cortes confirmed the introduction of a signal-proof pouch system to restrict mobile phone use during the school day.
Full implementation across Years 7 to 11 is planned by January.
This follows encouraging results from a staff survey showing low disruption and high job satisfaction among teachers compared to UK benchmarks.
We've reported on St Martin’s School expanding by over 50% at ground level, with an additional rooftop extension.
And a temporary nursery will be housed in the old Strength Factory site from September.
But the Education Minister confirmed the Government is looking at other sites in order to build a new school to cater for the growing number of children with special educational needs and disabilities.
Plans are underway to eventually split St Martin’s into lower and upper schools to meet rising SEND demand.
