Cannabis bales with an approximate street value of just over £4,000,000 were recovered at sea early on Saturday morning by the Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP), with help from HM Customs & the Gibraltar Defence Police.
The 27 bales weighed approximately 800kg and were recovered by the three agencies after the RGP had engaged in a high speed chase that lasted a full 30 minutes. The four smugglers managed to escape on their 14-metre RHIB, powered by three 300HP outboard engines, after jettisoning their cargo.
An RGP spokesperson said: "RGP, HM Customs & GDP marine crews continue to cooperate closely and support each other mutually on a daily basis, as part of Gibraltar’s continued contribution to regional and wider international efforts to combat drugs trafficking and other illicit activity."
