Daniel Cassaglia has stepped down as Medical Director and CEO of the Health Authority. The GHA has now withdrawn its protective appeal against the employment tribunal judgement, which found Mr Cassaglia had bullied a GHA employee.
At the end of August, the Health Authority was found to be in breach of bullying at work legislation by an employment tribunal.
Now an internal investigation is being conducted by the Chief Secretary, Darren Grech, and GBC understands that in order to allow due process, Daniel Cassaglia has stepped down as the GHA's medical director and CEO.
The Health Minister Neil Costa had previously told GBC if the GHA's legal advice confirmed the tribunal judgment was sound, its appeal would be withdrawn and internal disciplinary procedures resumed. He also said that the first decision he took on this matter was that any internal investigation would have to be led by the Chief Secretary.
That appears to be what is happening now, though the Government says it will not comment on an ongoing, internal disciplinary issue.
A GHA memo to all staff this afternoon confirmed that Dr Krish Rawal, Deputy Medical Director, will be assuming the responsibilities of Medical Director in an acting capacity until further notice.
