People were asked to stay away from New Harbours on Tuesday morning following a "chemical reaction" in the area.

A spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service told GBC an area was cordoned off due to an incident with "hazardous" materials.

They said two unspecified chemicals had combined, giving out toxic smoke and gases.

Two appliances and eight firefighters were dispatched to tackle the incident, including a breathing apparatus team.

The area was evacuated, cordoned off and flushed down by the firefighters, while the Royal Gibraltar Police restricted access to the area.

It was reopened after confirming there were no further concerns over the safety of people and businesses.

GBC has put further questions to the Department of the Environment, and is awaiting answers.
