Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister in Madrid for discussions on Gibraltar’s future relationship with the European Union

Discussions over Gibraltar's future relationship with the EU continued in Madrid on Tuesday. The Chief Minister and his Deputy are in the Spanish capital with the the Attorney General Michael Llamas. 

The discussions are said to be “ongoing between different parties and at different levels”.

The Attorney General will then fly onto London to take part in the next formal round of talks which are expected to take place on Thursday.

Fabian Picardo and Joseph Garcia will join the meeting virtually.

The Government says it remains fully committed to arrive at a positive, safe and secure treaty for Gibraltar. With The Chief Minister “very optimistic” that such a treaty will be agreed.

On 18.01.23, Mr Picardo told GBC that the negotiating parties for an EU Treaty are now converging on "red line issues", but have to make sure none of the red lines are reflecting in the detail of the Treaty.
