Coastal clean up on World Ocean Day sees 49 kgs of plastic collected

World Ocean Day was marked in Gibraltar by two coastal cleanup events on either side of the rock. The Nautilus Project led an event at Catalan Bay, joining forces with Gibraltar's girl guides to conduct the 43rd 'great Gibraltar Beach Clean', during which they collected and recycled 49 kilograms of plastic.

Over at Rosia Bay, the Department of Environment's Marine section and the Neptunian Network were undertaking a deep clean of their own. The Neptunian Network is described as a group of NGOs, clubs and individuals who are passionate about the marine environment, and with the support of divers and volunteers throughout the day they collected a significant quantity of rubbish which had been littered on the sea bed around the bay.

The Environmental Safety Group oversaw proceedings and provided further support and equipment to volunteers. The group congratulates all involved and looks ahead to their next major clean up dive for World CleanupDay on September 21st.
