A Command Paper has been published, starting the consultation process towards the possible legalisation of same sex civil marriage in Gibraltar.
The draft Bill to amend the Marriage Act was today published as a Command Paper: with an extended period of three weeks for public consultation due to the Christmas break. The next stage would see the proposal become a Bill, for consideration and debate in Parliament.
The Minister for Equality said the Government was fulfilling its manifesto commitment to publish the Command Paper in order to consider the public’s views. Samantha Sacramento added the proposed amendments to the legislation do not impose changes on the practices or beliefs of any religion. She described it as a major piece of legislation, promoting the principle of equal treatment of citizens under the law.
