Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Garcia has described the proposed Gibraltar treaty with the European Union as “an example of pragmatism, partnership and progress in action.”
Speaking at the Gibraltar Government’s event at the Liberal Democrat Party Conference in Bournemouth, Dr Garcia said the treaty is built on mutual respect.
He told the Lib Dem party conference the Treaty will uphold British sovereignty while reflecting Gibraltar’s desire for a closer EU relationship.
The Liberal Party Leader says it will uphold Gibraltar’s right to self-determination, its British identity, and its links with Europe.
Dr Garcia addressed Lib Dem delegates after travelling overnight to ensure Gibraltar’s voice was heard.
Lord Jeremy Purvis, Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, reaffirmed the party’s support for Gibraltar’s sovereignty and its people’s right to choose their future.
Dr Garcia also joined a panel on rebuilding UK-EU relations, where he outlined Gibraltar’s unique post-Brexit needs, highlighting the importance of a fluid border for cross-border workers, tourism and trade.
He confirmed that ratification of the treaty in the UK would be triggered by a Gibraltar Parliament debate and motion.
