Gibraltar's Equality Rights Group has launched a campaign, Action on Poverty, with the aim of forming a non-partisan coalition of concerned civil society organisations and individuals.
The ERG says it hopes to confront and overcome issues caused by wealth inequality, saying, "for a wealthy society with one of the highest GDPsin the world, that any semblance of poverty in our midst should be tolerated must shock us all".
It points specifically to a Social Security system which it describes as inadequate, unacceptably secretive, and in urgent need of reform.
The ERG says prosperity must be justly distributed and that whichever political grouping is in power must invest to build more adequate structures for the protection of society.
