The Spanish Government has confirmed that the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) will not be implemented at the Gibraltar border, at least for now.
Originally set to launch across all Schengen borders on 12 October, the system will now be introduced in phases, starting with airports.
No date has been given for when land borders, including the Gibraltar-La Línea crossing, will be included, though Spain’s Interior Ministry says this will be part of phase two.
The EU has set a final deadline of April 2026 for full implementation.
Although the technology is already installed at the frontier, the current bridging measures it seems will remain in place for now.
Whether the new system is ever applied at the Gibraltar border may depend on whether the UK-EU treaty on Gibraltar is signed and ratified in time.
The deal expected to remove the physical frontier altogether.
