A former Foreign Minister of Australia is advising the Government on Gibraltar's position in the UK's trade negotiations with Commonwealth countries, in particular with Australia.
This is according to the Government, which says no formal agreement has yet been signed with Mr Downer, but that work on this is at an advanced stage.
Number Six says it considers Mr Downer ideally placed to provide this advice, as Australia's longest-serving Foreign Minister, and a former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
The story was first reported in the Sydney Morning Herald, after Mr Downer placed himself on the Australian federal government' transparency register as a consultant.
The Government says the discussions are advanced but no timetable has been set.
