Former Second Sea Lord, and ADC to the Queen, Vice Admiral Sir David Steel, is tipped to become Gibraltar’s next Governor, GBC understands.
The process to find a new Governor began last July, with the post advertised publicly for the first time. The current Governor, Lt Gen Ed Davis, is expected to leave Gibraltar in early 2020.
Sir David Steel’s career in the Royal Navy spanned from 1979 to 2015, serving in the Kosovo War aboard HMS Invincible, for which he received a Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in 1999.
He is also a lawyer, having been called to the bar in 1988, as well as a Freeman of the City of London, and an ambassador for the Woodland Trust.
In answer to GBC questions, a spokesman for the Convent said no formal announcement has yet been made regarding the appointment of the next Governor of Gibraltar.
