GHA begins seasonal vaccinations to protect against flu and Covid

The Health Authority’s seasonal vaccination campaigns begin today, with flu vaccines now available.

COVID vaccines are only given by appointment: you can book yours from today.

The GHA is encouraging those eligible to take up the offer.

It says over 60 people were admitted to hospital during the last flu season.

According to the Director of Public Health, last year's flu season saw 66 people admitted to hospital suffering from the effects of the virus - with 30 of those being children.

Dr Helen Carter says it's extremely important to protect yourself and your loved ones by taking up the vaccine offer.

Both vaccines are available to people aged 50 and over; those with long-term health conditions, or who care for someone with these conditions; pregnant women; healthcare and care workers; and residents in long-term care facilities such as those run by the ERS.

The children's flu vaccine will be administered through local schools via a nasal spray.

Additionally, anyone eligible aged 12 and over can go to walk-in flu vaccination sessions at the Primary Care Centre on weekday afternoons between 1pm and 4pm.

And, the flu vaccine will also be offered at Casemates Square between 9am and 1pm, this week until Thursday and again this Saturday.

The unit will also be in Casemates from the  20th to the 23rd October, the 25th October, and the 1st November.

Public Health Director Doctor Helen Carter says Covid remains active year-round.
