GHA expected to make announcement regarding MRI this quarter

Published by GBC News

The GHA is expected to make an announcement regarding access to an MRI service by the end of March.

In response to GBC questions, the government announced plans to acquire an MRI scanner in June 2019, saying it should be in place by early 2020.

In May 2020, again in response to GBC questions, it confirmed plans were on hold while it dealt with the Covid pandemic.

At the time a spokesperson said the GHA outsources between 2,500 to 3,000 MRI scans each year to Scanner Sur in Spain. The cost per scan, it said, was commercially sensitive information.

GBC last week asked whether plans were still in place to bring an MRI scanner to Gibraltar, and if so, why it hadn't happened yet.

In reply, Number Six limited itself to saying the Health Authority was "working on plans to enable it to have access to an MRI service in Gibraltar"
