Gibraltar beat Liechtenstein 2:1 to claim second successive competitive UEFA win

Gibraltar beat Liechtenstein 2:1 on Tuesday night to claim only their second ever competitive UEFA win.

The visitors scored the only goal of the first half after a defensive error. But, buoyed by a sell-out crowd, Gibraltar's footballers fought back in the second half, reducing the deficit when forward George Cabreras headed in a Lee Casciaro cross from the right. As the reds continued to push forward, the winning goal came from another header: this time by Joseph Chipolina, who nodded in a Liam Walker corner.

2000 fans packed the Victoria Stadium and cheered Julio Ribas’s team on as they took the game to the visitors: they had less possession (44%) but five attempts on target to Liechtenstein’s two.

It was a nervous finale as the visitors rattled the upright and tested Kyle Goldwin in the Gibraltar goal. But with considerable help from the central defenders Roy Chipolina (captain) and Joseph Chipolina, the reds held on for a memorable win.

2:1 and another three points in the UEFA Nations League, just days after beating Armenia 0:1. Gibraltar FA General Secretary Dennis Beiso told GBC the team was overjoyed and very emotional. He praised the players and the head coach. "This has come earlier than expected... there's a sense the Gibraltar FA is heading in the right direction, slowly but surely."
