Gibraltar hosting runway event as part of Concurso de Elegancia Costa del Sol

Gibraltar will be hosting a runway event at Joshua Hassan Gibraltar International Airport on Saturday as part of the Concurso de Elegancia Costa del Sol. 

The privately organised and funded event will see the runway closed for bikes, scooters and pedestrians from 1-4pm. 

Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo described the event as a unique opportunity to bring an internationally recognised automotive event to Gibraltar for the first time, attracting visitors, exceptional vehicles, leading international brands and specialist media coverage, while providing valuable exposure for Gibraltar. 

70 rare, high-performance and luxury vehicles from around the world including hypercars, pre and post war classic cars and motorsport vehicles will drive into Gibraltar and participate in an invite-only event at the runway. 

The event works with luxury brands like Buggati and Bombardier, with the latter also flying a new private aircraft to Gibraltar to specifically display at the event.

Members of the public will be able to see participating cars displayed outside the airport for a period of time, along with seeing them drive around Gibraltar, with public vantage-points for the runway track-style drives including Western Beach, the runway barriers on Winston Churchill Avenue, and Princess Caroline’s Battery. 

Event organisers have also made a charitable contribution to an MOD supported charity. 

The Government highlighted the event is not Government-let and no direct Government funding has been provided to the organisers for staging it. Instead, the Government’s role has been to support and facilitate the necessary coordination with relevant authorities. 

It says Gibraltar’s inclusion in the programme for the first time provides an important opportunity to showcase the Rock internationally and demonstrate its ability to host distinctive, high-quality events. 

Kingsway Tunnel’s cycle lane and pedestrian walkway are the alternative routes in place for pedestrians, bike and scooter riders wishing to get to and from the frontier. 

A free shuttle bus is also available during the time between the Park and Ride bus stop and the Frontier bus stop.
