Government says fight night at St Michael's Cave not organised by GSLA or Ministry of Culture

A private fight event at St Michael’s Cave, reportedly organised by Andrew Tate, took place on Saturday evening - the day after Tate’s house arrest was extended by the Bucharest Tribunal in Romania.

Tate is being investigated on allegations of human trafficking and rape, which he denies. He appeared on a large projected screen to deliver a recorded message during Saturday’s event in Gibraltar.

The government has said the event, which involved multiple fights, was not organised by either the GSLA or Ministry of Culture and that it has no responsibility for private activity or events.

It has not said who the organisers are, but says it would not engage with them in future.

We heard from the Gibraltar Boxing Association, as a member of the International Boxing Association, which said it had played no part in what it believed to be an "unlicensed and unregulated" event.

Number Six has declined to answer who gave permission for the event to go ahead.

In response to GBC questions, it says it was aware that a fight night event was organised at St Michael’s Cave on Saturday, but that there was “no prior knowledge” of any connection with Andrew Tate. The British-American social media personality is being investigated on allegations of human trafficking and rape, which he denies.

It says the fight event was licensed, however, and went through the usual assessment by the Safety Advisory Group, which it says “considers all the aspects of every event application”.
