The Governor has been shown around the Northern Defences for the first time, as works continue in the refurbishment of Gibraltar’s primary fortifications against land-based attacks.
Much of the area, known locally as ‘the jungle’ lay under hundreds of tonnes of rubble and rubbish for decades if not longer, with the paths in the area also falling into disrepair.
Sir David Steel was taken to the site of the most recent discovery – Amphitheatre gallery, constructed in 1789 – which until recently had been completely concealed.
Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia, said it was remarkable how layer after layer of military ingenuity was being uncovered and said exposing it provides both a historical site and a leisure area in the centre of town.
