The Government has announced plans to expand and refurbish Sunrise Hostel to improve accommodation for its residents.

Housing Minister Pat Orfila said the project will provide modern facilities and high-quality living spaces, including accommodation for residents currently staying at Queen’s Hostel.

The development is expected to deliver 107 beds made up of 49 single rooms and 29 double rooms. It will also include four new kitchens, three laundry rooms and a lift to improve accessibility.

Action for Housing says it welcomes the announcement by Pat Orfila in respect of the expansion and refurbishment of the Sunrise Hostel.

The pressure group says the project will not only improve the accommodation available to current residents, but will also provide suitable housing for those living at the Queens Hotel Hostel. The conditions at that facility, the group says, have been repeatedly highlighted and criticised by them due to what it describes as their unacceptable standard.

The group says it now hopes the works at the Sunrise Hostel will be completed within the timeframe announced by the Housing Minister, adding that this will enhance residents' quality of life and contribute positively to their overall wellbeing.
