The GSD is calling for more investment in Gibraltar’s fire and rescue services following Wednesday night’s blaze at the One Bayside construction site.
The party’s Shadow for Emergency Services, says the scale of the response, including support from the Airport Fire and Rescue Service, higlights the demands placed on firefighters.
Joelle Ladislaus says the fire service needs modern equipment, facilities and resources to deal with incidents in Gibraltar’s densely populated urban areas, the nature reserve and at sea.
The GSD is also renewing its call for a new fire station, saying the Government has been promising one for 15 years.
It says the station should include purpose-built training areas and space for appliances and equipment.
The party also points to the need for an aerial ladder, which it says has yet to arrive in Gibraltar, amid the increase in high-rise buildings.
Ms Ladislaus says firefighters deserve more than praise for their work, and that support and investment are needed to ensure the service is properly equipped for the next major incident.
