A Guardia Civil boat entered Gibraltar waters and blared its siren early this morning - with residents of nearby Waterport Terraces complaining of the noise.
In response to GBC questions, the Convent said it's aware of an incursion by a Spanish vessel.
It says this was challenged by a Gibraltar law enforcement vessel to ensure it left British Gibraltar waters.
A spokesperson said the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office makes formal diplomatic representations to Spain where appropriate.
They restated the FCDO's position that incursions are a violation of UK sovereignty, not a threat to it.
For his part, the Chief Minister told GBC the Government was seeking further details on the incident.
However, Fabian Picardo described the Guardia Civil's actions as "unconscionable".
