Local fishermen are angry at the levels of illegal Spanish fishing taking place in our waters, according to the GSD.
Environment spokesperson, Trevor Hammond, says he is approached ‘almost daily’ with reports of illegal net fishing in Gibraltar waters, despite the GSLP Government 2011 manifesto commitment to stop this.
Mr Hammond adds that millions of pounds have been invested in maritime assets to police our waters, but claims the Government has ‘failed to practice" what it has has preached.
He also accuses the Government of double standards in its application of local law, explaining local fishermen regularly have their permits checked but Spanish fishermen do not.
Mr Hammond says the discrimination is ‘unacceptable’, adding ‘the law must apply to all’.
