Landmark ruling: US Supreme Court lifts 26-year-old sports betting ban

The US Supreme Court has lifted America’s 26-year-old nationwide ban on sports betting, paving the way for states across the country to legalise the industry .

The move has prompted a surge in the value of London-listed gambling firms by £1.5 billion pounds as British bookmakers and online gambling companies are set win new customers in the lucractive US market.

The ruling, by seven votes to two, follows a legal challenge by the state of New Jersey, which argued that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 was unconstitutional.

William Hill, who are headquartered in Gibraltar, described this as a “landmark” moment. Chief Executive Philip Bowcock said all attention will now shift to the States.
