Local father and son to be extradited to Spain in connection with people-trafficking investigation

A local father and his son, who are wanted in connection with an investigation into people trafficking, are to be extradited to Spain.

Ahmed Salam and Hamza Salam appeared at the Magistrates' Court and consented to be extradited to Spain, where there is an intent to prosecute them.

The two men are wanted by Spanish authorities in connection with a joint Policia Nacional and Royal Gibraltar Police operation targeting a people-trafficking organization. The operation saw 47 arrested in Gibraltar and Spain this weekend.

The 58 year-old and 27 year-old were arrested in September of last year, on the strength of a European Arrest Warrant issued by a La Linea court.

They initially refused to be extradited but have now consented. Their agreement to do so follows a guarantee from Spain that should they be sentenced, they will serve their sentence on the Rock.

The pair will be kept in prison and sent to Spain within ten days.
