Local architects win third prize at Street Seats design challenge in Portland (USA) with bench design that places wheelchair user in the middle rather than on the side

A local team has won third prize at the Street Seats design challenge in Portland, America. Gamma Architects beat off competition from around the world in their attempt to reimagine the public bench. Their design allows a wheelchair user to sit in the middle of the bench rather than on the side.

One of Gamma’s benches is now installed permanently in the main plaza in front of the World Trade Centre in Portland. The firm’s founder Ruth Massias Greenberg hopes it will be possible to install the bench locally as well.

Our reporter Jonathan Scott spoke to her, and to paralympian Benji Borastero, who travelled with the Gamma team to Portland and met with several disability associations there.
