Locals being targeted by 'Romance fraud' tricksters: friend of victim gives personal testimony to GBC

Romance fraud took a sharp rise in 2021 according to the US Federal Trade Commission, as lonely people facing lockdown were targeted by confidence tricksters who purport to enter into a relationship with them, only to then scam them for money.

And in Gibraltar, people are still being targeted by these scam artists, some of them actually falling victim of the ploy.

A friend of one of these victims Marian Alami-Mercer, spoke to our reporter, Jonathan Sacramento, and warned people to look out for anyone they know who may be vulnerable.

A guidance document from the Thames Valley Police and the University of Roehampton on how to protect those you know from Romance Fraud can be downloaded here .
