Many Happy Returns Ma'am- Queen celebrates official birthday

Published by GBC News

The Queen celebrates her official birthday today, in a tradition started by King George 11 in 1748. He decided it was too cold to publicly celebrate his birthday on the day he was born: in November. “June,” he thought, guaranteed better weather. There was also the annual Trooping the Colour Parade and so he decided to combine the two. (Hence the Queen’s Birthday Parade)

When the Queen started reigning, her official birthday was held on a Tuesday but was then changed to a Saturday so more people could enjoy the parade. This is usually the second Saturday in June.

As well as trooping the Colour, there’s a 41 gun salute in Hyde Park, an 11 gun salute in Windsor Park and a 62 gun salute at the Tower of London. The Queen celebrates her real birthday, on the 21st of April, privately. She is 91.
