Minor oil spill caused by yacht sees quick response by Port Authority

There was a minor oil spill this afternoon, caused by an overflow that took place as a yacht was taking on lubricant oils at Western Arm.

In a statement, the Ministry for the Port says immediately after the spill was reported, the Port Authority informed the relevant agencies and attended the scene to assess the situation. It adds the yacht crew deployed oil spill absorbent booms and pads into the sea, with the spill contained near the yacht and the Detached Mole. Oil pollution responders also carried out clean-up operations. It’s estimated around two to four litres of Luboil was spilled into the sea.

Captain of the Port, Manuel Tirado, said the quick response by those tackling the oil spill meant the incident had a limited impact on the environment.
