A new children's book is helping families talk about dementia with love, compassion and understanding.

Mama’s Treasure Chest, by Karen Truman, was launched this week with all proceeds going to the Gibraltar Alzheimer's and Dementia Society.

The book is in memory of dementia champion, Daphne Alcantara.

Dementia can be frightening for anyone when someone they love receives a diagnosis.

But for children, it can be difficult to understand.

It can be confusing and upsetting when a family member becomes forgetful, changes, or may no longer remember who they are.

Author of Mama’s Treasure Chest, Karen Truman, says the inspiration for the book came after she was asked to give a talk at a school.

She says she realised the easiest way to explain dementia to children was through a story.

The book was launched this week, during Dementia Awareness Month.

Its illustrations are based on artwork by Daphne's daughter, Chris-Anne.
