A new camera installed on Queensway this morning will assist in identifying vehicles that do not have a valid MOT certificate.
It is part of a trial rollout of Automatic Numberplate Recognition (ANPR) cameras that use high speed imaging to take pictures of vehicles, after which the information is cross referenced with a database of licenses and relevant MOT certificates.
Recent figures released by the Government point to 52,000 vehicles registered in Gibraltar, 16,000 of which do not have a valid MOT.
In answer to GBC questions, Number Six said the government has previously committed to the installation of ANPR cameras, and says that as well as being a legal requirement, compliance is important for both safety and air quality.
It reminds the public that individuals in compliance with MOT laws have no cause for concern.
