All Royal Gibraltar Police officers and anyone else who comes into contact with a crime scene will have their DNA collected as part of the RGP’s new Gibraltar DNA database system.
Having officers’ DNA on file can save time in investigations and minimize doubt about evidence at trials because it allows authorities to identify unknown genetic material found at crime scenes.
As from yesterday, everyone taken into police custody will have a DNA sample taken for profiling and testing against crime/victim samples. All police officers are supplying their DNA, with this to be a requirement in contracts for new officers in future.
