A major development in the upper town area and new premises for the Electricity Authority at Lathbury were both on the agenda for the latest meeting of the Development and Planning Commission.
The monthly meeting took place Thursday morning.
The proposed construction of a ten level residential development at Carrera’s Passage already has outline planning permission.
The DPC heard that although the building was sold under vacant possession, there were issues with sitting tenants who were facing eviction.
Minister for Housing Pat Orfila told the meeting an agreement was made with the owner of the building for four Government houses to be refurbished in exchange for two sitting tenants being re-homed. The individuals were high on the housing waiting list.
Plans for a new building for GibElec were also put before the Commission.
The building is to be located on ex MoD property at Lathbury, accommodating offices and storage.
Adjacent to the Nature Reserve, the site is screened by tree coverage, reducing the visual impact.
DPC members approved the plans with conditions, namely the inclusion of green areas to reduce heat and provide shade, as well as changes to the proposed colour scheme of the cladding.
Among the applications not under discussion, the proposed development at Both Worlds was brought up. Including apartments, a three-storey dwelling and car park, the development has previously been approved, and was on the agenda for the approval of revised plans.
The Environmental Safety Group had previously raised objections to the development, and reiterated environmental concerns. The Group's Janet Howitt highlighted that issues should be brought up before full planning applications come before the commission, especially with a proposal like this, which has a direct impact on a public beach.
The next meeting is scheduled for the 21st August.
