The new Gibraltar £1 coin could have an outline map of the EU area without the UK, but with the Union Jack symbolising the past and the future.
In answer to GBC questions, the Government revealed that this was their current line of thinking in response to the announcement that all UK Overseas Territories will, for the first time, be able to design and mint its own versions of the new 12-sided £1 coin.
The Treasury said this underpins the UK’s commitment to its territories and dependencies, and will ensure they can benefit from the increased security that the 12-sided coin offer. The new coins are expected to feature images celebrating the heritage of individual territories, with their history and culture pictured on the reverse side.
In respect of the design or the selection process for the Gibraltar coin, No.6 said that at this stage, it is too early to say who will contribute to the design or how it will be selected.
