New Mayor John Gonçalves says he wants to give young people a voice

John Gonçalves has been appointed Gibraltar's Mayor at an investiture ceremony at City Hall on Thursday and Christian Santos Deputy Mayor.

The new Mayor said he wants to give young people a voice and focus on making the City Hall an establishment that's open to the whole community. The President of the Amateur Basketball Association was, up until last year, the Chairman of the Gibraltar Police Authority. He's also a member of the local Sports Advisory Committee and was today appointed Mayor of Gibraltar at an investiture ceremony.

Former Miss World Kaiane Aldorino Lopez has been serving as Mayor of Gibraltar for the last two years, but on Thursday, instead of passing on a crown, she passed on the mayoral robes to John Gonçalves, but not before highlighting how valuable her time as mayor has served, both professionally and personally.

The Chief Minister then congratulated Mr Gonçalves on his appointment, referring to the new Mayor as Mr Basketball. Fabian Picardo said it was fitting that the sports enthusiast be appointed the same year as we host the Island Games.

When it came time for John Gonçalves to officially take his new title he said he plans to give young people in Gibraltar a voice.

Christian Santos, known for his work in music, on the drama scene and as Principal of the Gibraltar Academy of Music and Performing Arts, is taking over as Deputy Mayor.

The appointments of the new Mayor and his Deputy are in effect as from Thursday, with a calendar full of commitments already in the diary.
