A nine year old boy has died after a RHIB crashed into the boat he was in with his father, off the beach of Getares near Algeciras. The boy’s father was also injured.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon. The regional newspaper Europa Sur reports that the occupants of the RHIB were restrained by other beachgoers before they were arrested, pending an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
Eyewitness accounts reported in the regional Spanish press suggest the incident followed comments by the father to the pilot of the RHIB to the effect that he was maneuvering dangerously close to an area where people were swimming. The pilot of the RHIB - the sort used by drug traffickers to smuggle cannabis from Morocco into Spain - reportedly crashed into the small pleasure boat at speed, killing the boy, who was called Manuel, instantly.
The central Government’s representative in Andalucia, Antonio Sanz, said that there were no drugs onboard. The President of the Junta de Andalucia, Susana Diaz, posted on her Twitter account that she was "shocked and outraged" by the incident. "We must put in place" she said "once and for all, the necessary resources to end illegal activities in the Strait, which sow fear and pain among the good people of the region".
