Opposition questions state of the Gibraltar College - Government says new project is on track

The GSD has accused the government of overlooking serious issues at the College, which it says is deteriorating as delays continue in delivering new premises.

The opposition party asks why water ingress appears to have been ignored at the college, while ministers visit other schools in the wake of the recent storms.

However the Government says the new College project is firmly on track, and says it shows the GSD has no experience of building schools.

Opposition MP, Atrish Sanchez says it is simply not good enough for students and staff to have to learn and work in these conditions while the government fails to honour its long standing promise.

In a statement, the GSD highlights that the government first announced a new college in its 2019 manifesto, but after changes in location and repeated announcements, there is still no new college.

The opposition says the creation of a skills and technology college has long been one of its own commitments; one which, if elected, would be delivered without drift or delay.

But Education Minister, John Cortes, says construction has begun at the Europa Point site, with expanded classrooms, modern learning spaces, improved workshops and closer collaboration with industry so that students' needs are met.

Dr Cortes says he meets regularly with the project team to keep the development on track, and the new College is expected to open next year.

He says the GSD never built any new schools, and therefore they have no understanding of the complexities of planning and developing an educational establishment.
