Pandemic took hospital's Critical Care Unit to the edge of its ability to cope, says CCU Clinical Director

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken the hospital's Critical Care Unit right to the edge of its ability to cope.

Speaking on Viewpoint last night, the Clinical Director of Intensive Care and Anaesthesia said the CCU is used to dealing with deaths but not with the intensity and frequency of recent weeks.

Dr Hamish Thompson said his team has tried to focus on the lives they have saved. He reflected on the importance of updating families and loved ones who were unable to visit CCU patients, except at end-of-life.

Six of the 92-Covid related deaths registered in Gibraltar so far took place in the hospital's CCU ward.

GBC is grateful to the GHA for filming the CCU footage for us.
